The district wants an 89 cent increase that would generate $60,000. The money would not create new programs but instead just keep the status quo. Superintendent Bruce Forrest says he's worried about the school's ability to stay open because of declining enrollment, less state money and less money coming from the federal government. Much of Mark Twain's district includes land in the Mark Twain National Forest.

Sample Ballot

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Voters in Missouri's 62nd state house district will decide who will fill the seat of Dennis Wood. Wood resigned in September to accept the appointment by Gov. Jay Nixon to be Stone County presiding commissioner.

Republicans chose Nita Jane Ayres to appear on the ballot. Ayres had hoped to get the commissioner job. Libertarians also have a candidate: Patty Tweedle.

According to Missouri Ethics Commission reports, through December 31, Ayres had raised $20,355 during the fourth quarter of 2009. She had just $11,000 left after buying signs, t-shirts, and mailers for her campaign.

As of this writing, the Tweedle campaign did not have any reports on file with the MEC.

Where's a Democrat? James "Jim" Rynard had gotten the support of local Dems. But according to the Stone County Gazette, he was removed from the ballot for failing to file the proper paperwork. Rynard told Chad Livengood he did that intentionally since he was closing his law firm and moving out of the area.

The winner will only get to enjoy the victory for a few months. The seat will be open again in the fall. Oh, and the killer looks don't hurt either.

In her speech before thousands at College of the Ozarks Wednesday night, Palin herself touted her ordinary beginnings, "born far from Washington and Wall Street."

In chatting with Palin supporters, over and over they pointed to her personal story before mentioning any of her policy positions. That's what separates Sarah.

She wasn't Ivy League material. She took five years to finish a 4-year degree. She began modestly as a city councilwoman. She built a big family. She took on the boys club, rose to prominence quickly. Maybe too quickly. So what if she flubbed the Katie Couric interview? It's normal to be nervous. Do we really want the best interviewer? Look at where the speechifying Barack Obama has gotten us. And of course, being female is a plus.

This was the repeated reply from the Palinistas, mostly middle-aged women who believe the former Alaska Governor is not only a real-time example of what their daughters can accomplish, but what they would have liked to, if they had "the barracuda's" hunger, spunk and timing.

Palin has the sizzle and some natural talent that adds the spark.

A striking woman who speaks plainly, carries an accent that sounds comfortable in the Midwest and delivers raw political blows against anything establishment with a wink and a nod translates into big crowds.

"Only dead fish go with the flow," Palin said to cheers.

But as she builds a growing movement, seizes on her popularity and contemplates a 2012 presidential run, she's also undeniably in the middle of a rehabilitation tour.

Her message at College of the Ozarks, a speech closed to the media, was essentially three-pronged: 1) An attack on the mainstream media that she believed has maligned her and her family. 2) A defense of her decision to quit her Governorship mid-term parlayed into her anti-establishment message of carrying the torch of service without a title. 3) A blistering critique of the current administration's policies from big government spending to "apologizing" to foreign countries.

The rant against the "lame-stream" media was expected. At least five times, Palin pounded the press for "spinning my record."

She stressed she wasn't whining, but then blamed unsustainable attacks from her political opponents for pushing her out of the Governorship.

"Calling the audible has worked for my state," said Palin, in a sentence that some might interpret as saying Alaska's in better shape now that she's gone.

Palin's 50-minute speech was dubbed as a talk about citizenship and patriotism, but it undoubtedly ventured into politics.

She seemed to rouse the Keeter gymnasium with a call to action, but specific policy positions were glaringly absent.

She blamed the economic crisis on "misplaced government interference," but offered no alternative to the massive economic stimulus package. She called the doubling of the deficit "irresponsible and immoral," but steered clear of details on how to reign it in. She mocked "Washington leadership" for apologizing to foreign countries and then proclaimed "we need to be proud to be Americans," as if the current administration is not.

Palin is not a candidate yet and her supporters will argue, convincingly perhaps, that it's too early for hard and firm positions.

There is something real and compelling about Palin's story, but substance is what tripped her up during the 2008 campaign and it's what will continue to be under the magnifying glass going forward.

Ironically, she may end up with the same problem Obama had to combat.

Sure, she can deliver a heck of a speech and fill an auditorium. But then what?

Dixon, a genuine woman who acknowledged she enjoyed our spirited discussion on Palin, even stopped short of saying the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee is qualified for the top spot.

For her, it's more a visceral feeling from the gut.

"She's human and that's what we like," she said.

Herschend Raises Money for Long

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Bob Holden said he sees parallels between the budget problems Gov. Jay Nixon faces and the cuts that unraveled his own administration more than five years ago, but also warned that Nixon's ultimate success will primarily be driven by factors beyond his control.

In a wide-ranging interview Friday, Holden told The Notebook Nixon's political position won't matter much until July or August of 2012 and noted that Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder has done an "effective job" at rehabilitating his image to prepare for a potential challenge.

Q & A HIGHLIGHTS with HOLDEN:

On Nixon's Ability To Fulfill Campaign Promises:
"Like very candidate, there's what you say during the campaign and when you get to office, it's a sobering experience. I think you see the parallels with my administration. I made the decision to try to raise revenues and it wasn't popular. I don't see any indication (he'll take the same route)."

On Whether Nixon Will Be Able To Expand Medicaid:
"If Jay articulates why he's going to do what he's doing effectively, I hope he can. In the short run, it doesn't look pretty for the state of Missouri for the next few years."

On Whether Nixon Will Be Judged By Healthcare Expansion:
"No. That's just part of it. At the end of the day, it will be whether Missourians have jobs, or will have a job, or jobs are being created. That'll be primarily what he's judged on."

On Where He'd Like To See State Dollars Flow:
"This is self-serving, but I'd invest more dollars in plant and life sciences and, of course, education, with more accountability. I think sometimes Democrats are good at asking for more money for education, but not demanding results."

On The Impact of E.Coli-Gate:
"Time will tell. I haven't seen an administration yet that never had any problems. But I think people will look at the larger picture."

On Whether Nixon Can Control the State's Economic Climate:
"Not really. He can control it to an extent. But so much of it is dictated by national policy and global economics. You try to put as many pieces in place as you can. But many times the jobs don't come back until 6 to 12 months after the recovery. What Jay's got to hope is that early 2012, probably by July or August, people have the sense that things are starting to grow. I think there's a chance of that. I hope there's a good chance of that. He's going to be defined by what's happening in the economy at that time and how he's managed it."

On Nixon's Declining Poll Position:
"Part of that is built on the initial good feeling people have of a new Governor taking the job. The second part is having to deal with the budget situation they've been handed. When you are in turbulent economic times, you are going to see those numbers fluctuate. They will only begin to matter once your opponent is defined. Then, we'll see how solid the numbers are."

On Nixon's Potential 2012 Challenger:
"Peter (Kinder) has done a more effective job rehabilitating an image as I've seen in this state. He spends a lot of time in St. Louis. Just take a look at his record as a State Senator from Cape Girardeau. He's moved from a very conservative social agenda to a broader economic agenda. He's been every helpful to me on things. And give him credit for his positioning."

December, 2009

Dear Family and Friends,

We have been truly blessed this year. We celebrated many milestones, including the one year anniversary of the day we got Zeke. Zeke turned two in October. He’s talking so much now. He loves to play with toy cars, puzzles and balls. He enjoys being outside and swimming.

We made several trips this year. We took Zeke to Kingsport, Tennessee where he celebrated his first July 4th in the US. In August, we went to the Philadelphia area. This trip included Zeke’s first visit to the beach. Zeke loved the sand and ocean! In October, Missy and Zeke went to Las Vegas to meet another mom and her daughter who was adopted from the same orphanage as Zeke. Zeke is a seasoned traveler!

Brad has taken a new position with KY3, Inc. Early next year, he’ll become Director of Digital Content for two TV stations-KY3 and KSPR. He’s looking forward to this new opportunity. Missy still enjoys public radio and TV. She had several opportunities this year to file stories that aired nationally on NPR.

We began another big adventure this year. We are adopting a baby girl from
Ethiopia! We expect to get matched to a child next summer and bring her
home in the fall.

This year, we’ve had the chance to share our passion for adoption with
other people. There are so many children who need families. Even if you
are not considering adoption, please pray for these precious children and
their future families. If you ever want to learn more about adoption, we’d
love to visit with you about it!

We are so blessed to know you and have you in our lives.
This Christmas, we send you our love. It’s our hope that
the New Year is filled with joy and peace for you and your
family. We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Hugs,

Brad, Missy and Zeke
thebelotes@gmail.com<div There are fewer people around to help write and gather the news, more phone calls to answer, more feeds to look at, more fonts to turn in, and more teases to write. You feel glued to your chair, fearing that the moment you leave to even go to the bathroom something could change.

Go out for lunch
But the reality is that each person, whether you are a producer or an assignment editor, should take a lunch break away from the newsroom, even if it's only for 20 or 30 minutes. Get outside. See what the weather is like. See what (styles) people are wearing. Hear what people are talking about. Experiencing the outside world, even for 15 minutes, is important in helping you put together that days newscast. Maybe you will see something that gives you an idea for a story. You might meet someone interesting, again, someone who might be a story. You might see something that might make a cool live location.

Seeing stories in the community
News Directors are always talking about how producers and assignment editors need to 'see stories," when they are away from work. Going out for lunch, your antenna for stories is up! You are already in the "news mode." Maybe you'll pass a gas station with prices higher than you've ever seen (or lower than you've seen in a while). You might notice the new 2008 cars are already out on the car dealer lots, or you might sample the new sandwich at McDonalds. Reporters and photographers are out each day, but it's important for as many news people as possible to also get out and experience the day.

A break from the stress
Another reason to get out even for a brief few minutes is to just relieve the stress! You are in an incredibly stressful job. You will come back to your desk relaxed and ready to tackle the rest of your shift in a better mood.

It's a small thing, but an important thing. Get out of the newsroom everyday and you'll feel better about yourself, and your newscast will benefit as well.

Celebrity News

On another topic, I'd like to hear from readers about the recent rash of celebrity news. Do viewers want to hear about Paris Hilton's sentencing, see David Hasselhoff's video and listen to Alec Baldwin's voice mail to his daughter? Should this be included in a local station's newscasts, and if so, how should it be handled?

Send comments to ddrew@602communications, and we will publish some of the remarks in next week's column.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,128154-page,1/article.html

<OBJECT ID="MediaPlayer" WIDTH="192" HEIGHT="190" CLASSID="CLSID:22D6F312-B0F6-11D0-94AB-0080C74C7E95"
STANDBY="Loading Windows Media Player components..." Witnesses were stunned by what they saw.
"We saw the girl running out of the house, she had the baby in her hands, she had her by the legs, she was just beating her on the ground. We stopped and my heart just dropped."
Police say the child died of head trauma.. what they don't know is why Daniels did it.
"Tests did not indicate that there were any drugs in the mother's system. She was clean. No alcohol either."
Daniels' father tells k-y-3 she was beating treated for mental problems.
"No sane person would do this. My daughter needs help. She's not right in the head. "
a judge could determine if Daniels is fit to stand trial.
